William Standley was born 1752 in England, and died 26 February 1830 in Hobart, Tasmania. He married Mary Ann Anstey on 5 November 1791 in Norfolk Island.
William Standley was born 1752 in England and at the age of 32 he enlisted as a marine on the 24/2/1787 with the 5th Portsmouth Company and served on board "HMS SIRIUS" under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip and was one of the first fleet immigrants to arrive in Australia.
He was discharged from the Marine's in Sydney October 1791.
William Standley went to Norfolk Island on the 'H.M. Supply' 26 October 1791 where he was granted 60 acres of land 30 November 1791 at Cascade Stream, Philipsburg Town and I have found his land plot no.43 on the Island which he leased.
It was there he married Mary Anstey born 1749 a convicted thief, tried at Warwick Assizes, England who was sentenced to 7 years for stealing two silk handkercheifs from George Stubbs shop in Birmingham and Transported on the 'Lady Juliana' at the age of 40.
William and Mary had 3 children Mary, William, Joseph.
When the island was evacuated on the 14/2/1808 William's Family were put aboard the 'Lady Nelson' on her 3rd. trip taking the islanders to Hobart after 16 years of Island life where he was granted 50 acres of land at Campania and another 50 acres at Ulva ( Monmouth) which is near seven mile beach and Hobart Airport.
Mary, William's wife passed away in 1812 and is buried at St. David's, Hobart, and William was lost in the Derwent river 20/2/1830 while stepping off the Compton ferry and his body never found, he was about 77 years of age.
