With only four months of the sentence left to serve Bartholomew was sent to Norfolk Island which was settled as a penal colony on 6 March 1788.
On the return journey the “Sirius” was shipwrecked off Norfolk Island. There was no loss of life or damage done to all the important stores.
Bartholomew became a free settled in July 1790, four months after arriving on Norfolk Island. He is recorded as being a farmer until late 1805, when at the age of 81 he became a bell ring. He is also recorded as being a Hut Keeper in 1805 and considered to be a third class settler.
