Fern Hill in the person of Alfred
Hughes. Deceased was a native of Birmingham England, born May 30, 1830 and was the youngest son of Mr. John Hughes
of that city. He came to the colonies in the early forties. He landed in Svdney and after a short while proceeded to Mel-
bourne and thence to Launceston. After staying in the latter city for four and a half years he left for the Victorian gold
diggings and visited Ballarat, Forest Creek, Loddon, and Bendigo, where he had a very successful time. He returned
to Tasmania in the year 1854 and took up land in the Kettering district where he married Sarah Ann McKenzie the adopt-
ed daughter of Lieutenant Sinclair Keith Davey, R.N., who was assistant superentendent of the Tasmanian aborigines. Mr.
Hughes remained in Kettering until his death rearing a family of 14, nine sons and five daughters, all of whom are still living, besides 11 grandchildren and 15
great grandchildren. His eldest son (Mr. C. A. Hughes) has been a councillor for the Kettering ward for a number of years. Despite the boisterous weather a large and representative gathering of
friends and relations assembled to follow the remains which were interred in the Kettering Cemetery the Rev. Mr.Hebblethwaite officiating.
