GOLDEN WEDDING
MR. AND MRS. ROBERT HUGHES.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hughes, who for 48 ½ years after their wedding resided continuously at Kettering, celebrated the happy attainment of half a century of their married life at the prettily-decorated residence of his daughter, Mrs. H. Lange, Lyn Brae, Princes Street. Sandy Bay, on Saturday evening last.
Among the many messages of congratulatlon received by the happy couple was a greeting from Sir John and Lady Evans. Mr. Hughes is a native of Big Oyster Cove, and was born in 1862. He had 57 years' experience as a master mariner. Mr. Hughes
married Miss Sarah Phillips (of Prahran, Victoria), in June, 1884. There were five sons and four daughters of the marriage
but four sons and two daughters died in infancy. The eldest son, Mr. S. A Hughes of Kettering, is a successful orchardlst; the eldest daughter, Mrs. S. H.Fowler, now of Lockley's, Adelaide presented a wedding cake. It was a coincidence that the golden wedding of the parents took place on the same date as the daughter's silver wedding celebration. There were 40 relatives and
friends a the celebration. Mr. H. Lange (son-in-law) proposed the health of the couple, and Mr Hughes, in a breezy speech, acknowledged the toast. The toast of the "Host and Hostess," Mr and Mrs H. Lange was enthusiastically honoured. Mr. H. H. Heading (Mr. Hughes' brother-in-law) paying a tribute to the traditions of the family. the function was a most enjoyable one, many old associations being renewed.
