OBITUARY
MR. R. R. M. HUGHES
Long Association With River Trade.
The death took place on Tuesday at the home ot his daughter Mrs. H. Lange, 225 Bathurst St., Hobart, of Mr. Robert Randolph
McKenzies Hughes, for many years a well known figure in shipping circles.
Born in 1862, a son of the late Mr. Alfred Hughes, orchardist of Fern Hill, Kettering, he engaged in brickmaking at Kettering,
transporting the product, by ketch, to Hobart. He subsequently served with a Channel trading company, now Huon Transport Pty. Ltd., and for 57 years was actively employed as a master mariner. He was a keen participant in Hobart and Huon regatta events, and competed on such occasions in trading
ketches, of which the Cyclone, Rebel, Nellie May, and Wild Wave are well remembered craft. He married in 1884. Miss Sarah
Phillips, of Castlemaine (V.) and their golden wedding was celebrated at their home at Kettering. After the death of his wife he retired, in 1933, to live at the home of Mrs. Lange. He is survived by a son, Mr. S. A. Hughes, of Duke St., Sandy Bay, and by two daughters, Mrs. Lange and Mrs. S. H. Fowler,
of Lockleys (S.A.). There are nine grand children and three great-grandchildren. Surviving members of the family circle of his
own generation are his brothers, Mr. Hugh Hughes, of Arthur St., Hobart, Mr. Horace E. Hughes, of Launceston, and Mr. C. Hughes, of Waterloo Crescent. Battery Pt., and his sisters Mrs. W. Large, Fern Hill, Kettering, Mrs. M. Brown. Oyster Cove, Mrs. C. Barnett, Sydney, Mrs. T. Newman, Scottsdale, and Mrs. H. Reading. Molle St., Hobart.
The funeral will take place at Cornelian Bay today.
