George was born in 1844 (but no entry in birth certs index), and was baptised at St Dunstan’s, Stepney, on 20 October 1844. In the 1861 census, aged 16, he was living at home, and by 1871 was noted as a 26-year-old carpenter and still living with his parents. At age 35, he married Amy Land (age 26; born in Knightsbridge) on 15 November 1879 at St Matthias church in Richmond. At that time his occupation was joiner, and he was living in Stepney; Amy’s residence was noted as Richmond. The marriage was witnessed by George’s father, Edward.
At the time of the 1881 census (April), George and Amy were living at 6 Peldon, Richmond; they subsequently had five children, all registered in the Richmond South district:
•George Edward Land b Q4 1881;
•Charles Joseph b Q3 1883
•William Arthur b Q3 1884
•Amy b Q1 1886
•Amy Elizabeth b Q2 1887
•Sarah Annie b Q3 1889
(The first Amy died in the same year; it was not uncommon to findthesame name used for a second child after the first had died ininfancy.)
All of George’s and Amy’s sons are believed to have been unable to have children.
George senior is thought to have died in Brentford, in Q3 1922 at age78; his wife Amy is believed to have died in Q4 1937 (registered at Hastings) , perhaps moving there after being widowed to live with her daughter Amy Elizabeth.
