Joseph and Ann, with their four youngest children - William - Stephen - Elizabeth and Andrew, left London on the "James" on 3 October 1840 and arrived in Hobart on 15 February 1841. They settled at :Copmanhurst" Oatlands where Joseph was a brewer.
Their two eldest sons - Edward and Joseph, had arrived in Tasmania in 1837 on the "William Metcalfe" and had established themselves and their families at Oatlands. Their son Richard and his family came out in 1854 on the "Northumberland" followed two years later by Thomas and his family on the "Sir W.F. Williams".
James and his family decided to go to N.S.W. in 1840 and they settled at Uralla where James took up farming. John remained in England.
