About Morgan, Ernest Augustus
In 1898 Ernest A Morgan won enough money in a foot race to travel to Queenstown, Tasmania to find work as a woodcutter for the Mt Lyell blast furnaces.Returning to Ben Lomond, Tasmania to trap Tasmanian Tigers for estate owners (Pearce). After marrying Grace Wright (nee Squires) in Burnie in 1919 (Marriage License No 214) they travelled to Queenstown where he took up the lease on the Metropole Hotel (Owned by Illingworth's). He also leased the Railway Hotel South Queenstown up until it was burnt down. He owned, trained and raced horses at Queenstown, Strahan and Zeehan and his sons where the riders The horses were riden from Queenstown to the other towns, raced and riden home again. Ernest and Grace owned a property in Arthur Street Queenstown which had stables for horses used to get firewood on the Zeehan road the firewood was then collected by truck and delivered to whoever in the family needed wood at the time. Ernest was very good aussie rules footballer and played for the Smelters Football Club Queenstown winning the Best and Fairest in 1908.
