DEADLY "CATCH"
Victorian Fisherman Locates MineAPOLLO BAY, Tuesdav - When Roy Fisk, an Apollo Bay fisherman, felt a tug at his fishing line this morning he jerked the line vigorously, and brought a mine to the surface within a few feet of his boat.
Fisk notified other fishermen in the vicinity, and because of the danger of contact with the mine in a choppy sea all boats were sailed back to Apollo Bay.
A watch was kept all day on the water-
front and the mine which was said to be about 4ft 6in diameter, was seen floating within half-a-mile of the pier. The heavy south-easterly sea had caused it to drift gradually towards the shore and there was fear that it would arrive eventually among fishing boats in the enclosure. At 6 pm two minesweepers appeared and after a number of shots had been fired the mine was sunk
Navy officials announced tonight that the mine was definitely of enemy origin. They believe it was one of the mines laid in a field some time ago off the coast the location of which was known to the department There was no cause for alarm.
