FLINDERS ISLAND TRAGEDY

Leonard Mansell Released ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.

WHITEMARK, Wednesday. - The Coroner and jury have committed Archie Douglas Mansell to stand his trial for the murder of Edward Mansell. Leonard Mansell, who was first arrested on suspicion, has been released. Edward Mansell, a half caste about 47 years of age, was found at about seven a.m. on tha 26th inst. lying on the side of the Whitemark-Lady Barron main road, approximately 1000 yards from the town of Whitemark, unconscious, with his coat over him.' He was found in this condition by a farmer named Walter Virieux. Senior-Constable Mansfield and Dr. Bertram Ingram were immediately summoned to the spot, and after an examination of the man Dr. Ingram ordered his removal to the Whitemark Interstate Hotel, where he died without regaining: consciousness that day at 9.25 p.m. Evidence pointed out that in a drunken brawl about dusk on the 25th ^ inst. Deceased and others had been fighting with other halfcastes from the: Cape Barren Island halfcaste reserve, a reservation specially set aside for halfcastes on an island 15 miles distant. , These and others had been -called to the local Court in connection with some previous assault cases to be tried on the 25th inst- :

Dr. Ingram made a post-mortem examination of deceased's body and found that death was caused by two heavy blows on the skull, which may have occurred through coming into contact with a hard substance, or a blow with an instrument, or kicks. In the early stage of the inquiry it -was found that Leonard Mansell had 'hit deceased with his hands. He was; arrested on suspicion, but after the whole of the witnesses were examined he was released, and Archie Douglas 'Mansell, a nephew and son-in-law of the deceased, was arrested and committed by the Coroner and jury to stand his trial for murder. Detective Brown will proceed to the islands this afternoon by the s s. Colliboi. Upon arrival he will assist Senior Constable Mansfield in further investigations and will escort the accused man., to Launceston
