The Funeral
The funeral of Mr. Thomas Fletcher-Jones, who held the distinction of being the first apprentice engaged, by the late Mr. John Davies, proprietor of "The
Mercury" In 1854, and, with the exception of a break of two years, was a member of the mechanical staff for 59 years, took place at Cornelian Bay
cemetery yesterday.
The service at the graveside was conducted by Canon W. Hooker, who also held a brief service at the residence of deceased's daughter, Mrs. Robert Pidgeon. The remains were deposited in the family grave. Among the beautiful floral tributes were those sent by the proprietors and management of "The
Mercury" and "Illustrated Tasmanian Mail," Messrs. T. Smart and Sons, Mrs. Beck and son, Mr. and Mrs. Knight, Mr. E. Bentley (Government House), Mr and Mrs. S. B. Harper, Mr. R. Roberts, and Mrs. Aiken.
The chief mourners were Mrs. Pidgeon (daughter), Mr. George Jones (son), and grandsons and grand-daughters of deceased. Among those presons
at the graveside were the General Manager o£ "The Mercury" and "Illistrated Tasmanian Mail" (Mr. W. H. Cummins), Mr. G. A. Robertson (Accountant of "The Mercury" and "Mail"), Mr. C. Brown (news room overseer), Mr. H. McNeil (head reader), Messrs. S. Harper and A. Poultney (members of the commercial staff of "The Mercury" and "Mail"). There was also a gathering of members of the Manchester Unity
I.O.O.F., of which deceased was former Past Master.
Tile funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Alex. Clark and Son of Collins Street.
