Stealing an Umbrella.-Mary Callaghan appeared, also, on remand of Detective Simpson; on the charge of stealing one alpaca umbrella, the property of Mr. Henry Figg, residing in Collins street on the 13th inst.
Mrs. Charlotte Figg in evidence stated that on the day referred to she was in the shop of Perkins and Nephew. She placed her umbrella down, and when about to leave, found that it was gone. In consequence of something she heard, she, in company with Acting Sergeant Dore walked up Mole street. The accused was walking up the street, with the umbrella in her possession. The accused stated that she thought it was her own, and had taken it by mistake. The officer then took her in charge.
The witness here observed that she did not believe the accused took the article with felonious intention, but only in error, as the two umbrellas were very similar in appearance.
