Her married name was Bidewell. Jessie Georgina Butler Jessie was born the fifth child of Samuel and Eliza Butler on September
22, 1877. On that particular Saturday the family were living in the
Bethnal Green area of London at 5a, Tyssen Street. How long they had
been living at that residence we do not know, however the Butler's appear
to have been living in that area of London for some years.
Where her mother came from is not known, but her maiden name was Eliza
Mary Ann Curtis according to one of the children's birth certificates.
The oldest child, Jessie's sister, was Eliza Hannah, born about 1859 and
thus about 16 years Jessie's senior. On her wedding registration an
E.H. Griffin was a witness and this may have been her sister's married
name. However, John Bidewell, her husband had a sister named Ellen
Hannah, and it may be she who became a Griffin. But since there appears to have been also a Jemima Griffin, it may well have been that this was the husband of John's other sister.
The other witness was S.J. Butler, without a doubt Jessie's oldest
brother Samuel John. He was born about 1871. The spread of years between these two has never been explained. It is possible that Samuel was married twice, first to an Eliza Hooke Griffin and then to a Curtis.
Jessie's next sister, Florence was born about 1872, and her other
brother, Arthur Joseph in 1874. Little more is known about her childhood
and youth. She evidently lost her mother at a very early age, and
perhaps even her father also, since she often referred to herself asan
orphan. She was raised possibly by a close relative, but evidently not
under too happy a situation.
Whatever the circumstances, she was working as a domestic servant in the
Lambeth area of London when she met John William. He was also working at
the same residence, 9 Wansey Street, as a 'gentleman's servant'. After
their marriage, January 1, 1900 they moved from this job and located
possibly at 42 Steele Road, Acton Lane, Willesden. That was the address
when William George was born in 1901, and could well have been thesame
when Archibald John was born on May 10th the previous year. Both of these
boys were actually born at Sturry, Kent while she was at the home of one
called aunt Jemima Griffin.
The next few years of Jessie Georgina's life can be traced byreadingher
husband John William's account. He died on November 12, 1936 at Wood
Mountain, Saskatchewan and was buried at nearby Limerick. Jessie then
moved to Moose Jaw where she lived close to many of her family members
until she died at the age of 80. Right up to the end she remained in
good health and of sound mind. She is remembered as a very cheerful and
pleasant individual, soft spoken and devoutly religious. She became
closely associated with 'The Way' fellowship, as outlined in the article
'Religion and the Bidewell Connection'.
She passed away on November 3, 1957 at Lloydminster, Sask. while visiting
her oldest daughter, Eva Anna Joy.
