DILSTON TRAGEDY
Drowning of Two Persons
The Inquest
The Coroner (Mr. E. L. Hall) was' unable to determine as to how Harold James Hall and Mary Hoyle got into the water when they were drowned at Dilston on November 23. The inquiry into the circumstances of the tragedy took place at Launceston yesterday, when an open verdict was returned.
In- spector P. Hynes conducted the case for the police.
Harry David Hoyle said that on November 23 he went down the river In a motor launch with Harold James Hall, Mary Williams, and his mother, Mary Hoyle, for the week-end.
They arrived at Dilston about ll a.m., on Sunday, and shortly after Hall rowed witness's mother and Miss Williams to the shore, and then returned to the boat. Not long afterwards Hall returned to the shore for the two women, and witness watched their approach until they neared the launch. Next he saw them in the water. He put on a life belt, and jumped In the river, making towards Mary Williams, who was the closest to the motor boat.
He could swim about 30 yards. He reached the girl and caught her by the neck, and the tide carried the two under the jetty. His cries for help were heard on shore, and a man came and threw a life belt over the jetty, and the two were got out of the water. He did not see anything of his mother.
Hall was always aboard the motor boat when it went down the river, and was not a person likely to act in a foolish manner in the dinghy. Hall was able to swim, but the others could not. Witness did not see anything of Hall after the accident, and did not see the dinghy capsize. The water was calm.
EVIDENCE OF GIRL.
Mary Jane Williams, residing at 114 Wellington Street, Launceston, said thal she did not know how she came to get into the water. She felt the boat turn over. The water was choppy.
The Coroner: Harold Hoyle told me the water was quite calm.
Witness said she saw an upturned dinghy in the water, and did not know anything until she found herself in a motor car.
Constable Robert Gillespie said that at Freshwater Point on November 23 he recovered from the river the body of a female which was later identified as that of Mary Hoyle., Trooper E. Johnston said he recovered the body of Harold Hall from the river at Freshwater Point on December 1.
The Coroner returned an open verdict, but said it had yet to be explainet how the two deceased came to get into the water.1,3
He was buried on 2 December 1930 at Carr Villa Cemetery and Crematorium, Nunamina Avenue, Tasmania, Australia..Mon B13 127 1/2 Y ANG FIN 8227.
