Born atDeloraine 80 years ago, the late Mr Day when a lad came to Kentishwith his parents Mr & Mrs Henry Day. With the exception of a shortperiod, in the employ of Captain W. Jones of Burnie, he had resided inKentish ever since. Mr Day was a large landowner. In addition to landat Kentish, he selected at Staverton and Lorinna, and by energy &perseverance, converted virgin forest into cultivated fields. He wasinterested in mining & prospecting. He took no great interest inpublic affairs but was always ready to assist a worthy cause. He was aprominent draughts player, being a leading member of the Kentish Club.Mr Day was twice married & leaves a widow Mary [nee Carey whom hemarried in 1929] and daughter, Mrs Jake Collins (Ulverstone) two sonspredeceased him. They were Albert who died in the Great War andBenjamin who died recently at Ulverstone.

In the family of six of the late Mr & Mrs Henry Day, the death of MrGeorge Day is the first in 60 years, the other five surviving membersbeing Messers Leslie Day (Sydney), Charles & Henry Day (Kentish), MrsRobert Duff (Kentish) and Mrs Robert Braid (Staverton)

The funeral took place on Monday, when a large and representativecortege assembled at the Sheffield cemetery. The chief mourners wereHenry and Charles Day (brothers) and Messers R Duff and R Braid(brothers in law) The carriers were six nephews Messers J Duff, CBraid, M Day, H Braid, C Duff and J Mawley. The pall bearers wereMessers A Charleston, A Moore, R Braid, R Duff, A Hope, and W Braid.

Funeral services were conducted at the residence & graveside by Rev.Belot assisted by K Dyer.'

     Convict Isaac Briggs Isaac Briggs, second son of Joseph Briggs and Grace Firth, was born in Elland and christened on 25 Oct 1789 in Ripponden, Yorkshire. He married Alice Dean on 27 Oct 1821 in Halifax. He was born in 1789. He was christened on 25 October 1789 at Ripponden, Yorkshire, England. He married Alice Dean on 27 October 1821 at Halifax, Yorkshire, England. Convict Isaac Briggs arrived in 1829 at on the convict transport ship 'Lady Harewood' in Van Diemen's Land, Australia. He was Isaac was a wool sorter/comber in England, probably in one of the Halifax mills. He was given a life sentence in Yorkshire for counterfeit and forgery and arrived in Van Diemen’s Land on the 'Lady Harewood' in 1829.
Isaac was literate and was at one stage assigned to the Female Factory in Hobart, possibly involved with some sort of secretarial work oreven writing letters on behalf of the inmates, most of whom were illiterate. He later worked as a fellmonger with his brother Benjamin at Black Brush near Brighton and died there in 1852. The coronia linquest suggests that he was probably an alcoholic. in 1829 at Halifax, Yorkshire, England. He died in 1852 at Brighton, Van Diemen's Land, Australia.

     Alice Dean Alice Dean, was a straw bonnet maker. Alice and her remaining livingdaughter, Sarah, departed England for Sydney in 1838 to join herconvict husband in Van Diemen’s Land. The journey from Sydney toHobart on the 'Medway' took an extraordinary 5 weeks- there wereextremely bad storms and Master Wight had to take measures to protectthe passengers, one of whom was a VIP- Lady Jane Franklin, wife ofGovernor Franklin. Alice died during the journey, somewhere off NorthEastern Tasmania.

This event, and her interactions, with Sarah are recorded in Lady JaneFranklin’s journals.

Thursday 1st August
Snachall told me when bringing my breakfast, that the poor daft womanMrs Briggs had died about an hour before - It was only at dinneryesterday that I heard she was seriously ill, though some jokes hadbeen afloat for a day or two previously as to Mr Grant giving herMollison's pills, some times whole, sometimes pounded, sometimes in apowder by way of variety - I thought I would go and see her eitherafter dinner or next morning, but left it till morning - her complaintappears to have been inflammation of the bowels and she said all thru'her indisposition that she should die - at 12 o'clock I heard the belltoll, and took it to be a mark of decent respect to her memory, butpresently Mr Elliot knocked at my door and asked if I would be presentat the funeral. I made what haste I could to go on deck, where Captainand sailors and the women assembled and Mr Braim read the servicewhich he did very well -

Mrs Briggs had a little girl on board 11 or 12 years old she was saidto have behaved very ill to her mother and to have shown not the leastfeeling at her death - the child was present, was observed to watchvery attentively and to be affected at the disappearance of her motherin the waves - I sent for the child after dinner in my cabin and foundher very interesting and as I thought clever, expressing herself interms and in a manner beyond her years.

She did not express any sorrow at her mother's' death, but could havewished she had been buried on the land, she said -I mentioned at teathe favourable impression she had produced on me and then found thatall the gentlemen partly Wright, Grant, Braim and Elliot agreed inthinking her very bad child and Captain who was never mistaken - hesaid in anyone's countenance thought she had one of the worst he hadever met

Tuesday 6th/3 weeks
- had sick headache - read some of W. Scott - heard from Mr E. we hadgot 120 to 150 m. - E. but were not above 15 or 20 m. to N. of CapePillar - both he and Captain M. said if had got on 6 line in advancebefore wind changed should have got round Cape Pillar - At night thewind fall and we rolled more in the calm than before - having heardthat Sarah had put on her other frock and the pinafore she had madeherself and was very anxious to know if I should send for her (whichwas owing no doubt to Mt. Braim and M. Stanley having talked to her, Isent for her while in bed. She looked very tidy, with her hairbrushed back behind her ears - read to her made her read &c seeaccount of her -

Tuesday 13th
This day month left Sydney - at dinner, wind more to S. and someindication of approaching change, much knocked - had Sarah in evening,alluded to her ill conduct without mentioning particular in referringto nurse Mrs Stanley's baby child seemed sulky and on my asking herwhether she could answer me any questions as to yesterdays chaptersaid no - upon which I dismissed her, apply to her great satisfaction.

They eventually arrived in Hobart, passing Adventure Bay, BrunyIsland, on 19 August. Lady Franklin arranged for Sarah to beadmitted to the Orphan School and called in a few days later. Herjournal continued:

l enquired for Sarah Briggs who arrived in the school yesterday andhas been scrubbed & washed & clothed afresh, operations which MrsGazard assured me were highly necessary. I sent for Sarah who seemedpleased to see me, but flung herself round a little when I gave hersome good advice.
