Dalrymple Mountgarrett Briggs Dalrymple, Dolly (1808-1864)

by Ian McFarlane

This entry is from the Australian Dictionary of Biography

Dolly Dalrymple (c.1808-1864), Aboriginal matriarch, was born in theFurneaux Islands in Bass Strait, daughter of George Briggs, a sealerfrom Bedfordshire, England, and Woretemoeteyenner (also known as Pungor Margaret), who was the daughter of Mannarlargenna, a chieftain fromthe north-east of Van Diemen's Land. One of two Aboriginal womenabducted by Briggs, she bore him three children before he sold her toanother sealer John Thomas for a guinea. Three of her daughters, including Dolly, were adopted by European couples on the mainland andher younger son John remained in the islands to be cared for by JamesMunro, another sealer.

Dolly's foster parents Jacob Mountgarrett (1773-1828), the surgeon atPort Dalrymple, and his wife Bridget had her baptized Dalrymple on 18March 1814. The author Charles Jeffreys referred to her in 1820 as'Miss Dalrymple' and James Bonwick as Dolly Dalrymple, the name bywhich she has become known. Jacob Mountgarrett was in continualconflict with the authorities and notorious as a bad debtor, suspectedof cattle stealing and misappropriating stores and medicines. Hisadopted daughter, however, was taught all the necessary domesticskills, as well as reading and writing, and was quick to learn. About1825 she left the Mountgarretts, to live with a convict stockmanThomas Johnson (1801-1867), who worked at Dairy Plains near Deloraine.Born in Cambridgeshire, England, he had been convicted of burglary inDecember 1822 and sentenced to death, later commuted to transportationfor life.

On 24 September 1830 G. A. Robinson visited the family, which thenincluded two girls aged 6 and 2. Informed by a local stock-keeper thatmany Aborigines had recently been killed in the district, Robinsonalso recorded that Dalrymple had lived for a time with the notoriousmurderer Cubitt and had assisted him in the killing of Aborigines. On22 May 1831, perhaps in response to earlier grievances, a group ofAborigines mounted an attack on the Johnsons' hut while the mother wasalone with her children. Armed with a musket, she held off the attackfor six hours until help
arrived. As a reward, the government granted her twenty acres (8 ha)of land at nearby Perth, where Johnson erected a dwelling.

Dalrymple married Thomas Johnson on 29 October 1831 with Anglicanrites. In August 1836, only recently pardoned, Johnson received afurther seven-year prison sentence for receiving stolen wheat. Withfour children to support, his wife displayed great resourcefulness andtenacity in holding her family together. In October she petitionedGovernor Arthur, asking that her husband be assigned to her as aservant, but the request was refused. By 1841, with Johnson out ofgaol, conditions began to improve and Dalrymple requested that hermother, then at Wybalenna, on Flinders Island, be permitted to livewith her. The petition was granted and Woretemoeteyenner came to Perthto live with her daughter and seven grandchildren.

The family moved to the Mersey region in 1845 and Johnson, pardonedagain, took over the tenancy of the Frogmore estate. Prospering in thenew district, he purchased 500 acres (202.3 ha) south-west ofFrogmore, where he built the family home, Sherwood Hall. He became theowner of two hotels (the Native Youth Inn at Sherwood and theDalrymple Inn at Ballahoo), a coalmine (the Alfred colliery) and atimber exporting business. The family became one of the largestlandholders in the district and was well respected. Dalrymple was saidto be devoutly religious. She died on 1 December 1864 at Latrobe aged56, survived by her husband and ten of her thirteen children. In 1865the widower married a younger woman Marie Emma Bourne. He died on 3December 1867.
