Convict Elizabeth Ann Adams

Convict Elizabeth Ann Adams was also known as Convict Elizabeth Wood. Her married name was Westlake. She was born on 14 March 1753 at Bishopsgate, London, England. She was baptized on 14 March 1753 at St Olave, Hart Street, London, England. She married John Wood on 13 August 1769 at St Botolph without Bishopsgate, Bishopsgate, London, England. Convict Elizabeth Ann Adams was Elizabeth Wood was tried at the Old Bailey on September 9, 1789,convicted and sentenced to transportation for seven years.
She was charged with stealing a pair of silk stockings and a pair ofcotton stockings. Charged with her was Sarah Conjuit, who, thoughaccording to the report she was found guilty and similarly sentenced,does not appear to have been transported to NSW.
Elizabeth Wood was described as the wife of John Wood.
Sarah Conjuit had a child in her arms and it appears from the reportthat the child belonged to Elizabeth Wood, and was probably the young Elizabeth Wood who arrived in NSW with her mother.
The theft took place in the premises of Isaac Garner, who said inevidence that he lived at Shoreditch Turnpike. A directory of the timeshows Isaac Garner, Hosier of 78 Shoreditch. Elizabeth Wood said she had gone to buy her husband some stockings, and had asked for amottled pair of stockings with clocks. Mrs Garner said she been asked for ribbed cotton stockings, and when she had shown some they said they did not like the rib.
Sarah Conjuit said that the child picked up some silk stockings, andshe gave them back, but Mrs Garner had accused them of stealing them. A Constable was sent for, found some pawnbroker's duplicates for pawned stockings upon them and they were charged.
A woman giving evidence of Sarah Conjuit's character said she hadknown her from a baby. 'Her parents are very honest, industrious goodpeople, and her poor mother lies almost dead in the yard now. She has been a girl on the town, unfortunate, but nothing else.
Elizabeth Wood was tried by Mr Justice Wilson and a Middlesex jury.'. on 9 September 1789.1 She arrived 9 September 1789 on the convict transport ship 'Neptune' in Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia. She married Convict Edward Westlake, son of Edward Westlake and Mary Reddaway, on 5 November 1791 at Van Diemen's Land, Australia.
