Convict Thomas Beswick

M, #80984, b. 14 July 1805, d. 16 January 1877
Convict Thomas Beswick was born on 20 June 1805 at St.Giles, London, Middlesex, England. He was christened on 14 July 1805 at England. He lived in January 1823 at Middlesex, England. He was Conviction on 16 January 1823 at Old Bailey, London, Middlesex, England. He was convict on 16 January 1823 at Old Bailey, London, Middlesex, England, (an unknown value.) Hewas transported on 4 September 1823 on the convict transport ship 'Sir Godfrey Webster' from England to Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. He arrived on the convict transport ship 'Sir Godfrey Webster' on 27 December 1823 in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. He married Mary Ann McKenzie, daughter of Alexander Mckenzie and Convict Ann Clarke, in 1834 at St. John's Church, St John Street, Launceston, Van Diemen's Land, Australia; The marriage of Thomas and Mary at St. John's, Launceston, in 1834, isregistered as follows:

No. 340 Thomas Beswick, Ticket of Leave, of the Parish of St John,Launceston, and Mary Peck, Free (Widow), of - Pattersons Plains - weremarried in this church by Banns, with the consent of Government, theSixth day of May in the year 1834. By me W.H. Browne LLD Chaplain

This marriage was ) Thomas Beswick (Sir Godfrey Webster)
solemnized between us) Mary Peck

In the presence of ) Samuel Yates of Launceston his x mark
) William Jones of Launceston

Recording the name of the ship (Sir Godfrey Webster) on which aconvict was transported was normal practice. It served to keepofficial record of their Thomas was still a convict for another twoyears although he would have been on `ticket of leave' for severalyears already. He was living in Launceston, probably in Bathurst St.,and working as a shoemaker, or `cordwainer', as he was called in amortgage document the previous year. Besides his place in town he hada property on the South Esk, within the Morven district. The nameYates(2) which appears on the South Esk land deeds is probably relatedto the one who witnessed their marriage. Those 50 acres together withThomas Brennan's having land on the South Esk, and his convictassignment at Morven suggests an association with the area whichprovided plenty of opportunity for him to have known Mary for someyears before they married.
Convict Thomas Beswick died on 16 January 1877 at Sheffield, Tasmania, Australia, at age 71 Aneurism of the Aorta.
