William John Amos was born circa 1852 at Canterbury, Kent, England. He lived in 1881 at 1 Cambridge Villas, 27 Sheldon Street, Croydon, Surrey, England.1 He appeared in the 1891 census. In the 1891 census, William (age 39), his wife Kate (age 35), and their four children (John, William [presumably the Ernest W from the 1881 census], Walter and George, aged 11, 10, 7 and 2) lived at 27 Tamworth Road, with Alice Wells, 27, now described as a domestic servant. According to the Post Office directories, William and Richard Amos (possibly William’s uncle?) had two grocers shops in 1882, at 17 Church Street and 82 Church Street West; in 1890 the shops were at 12 Lower Church Street and 35 Church Road, with only the latter recorded, in William’s name, in 1895. He lived in 1891 at 27 Tamworth Road, London, England.1
