     Convict James Batt was born on 22 August 1802 at Barton Stacey, Hampshire, England. He was baptized on 28 November 1802. He married Anne Anthony on 6 July 1823 at Barton Stacey, Hampshire, England, in the presence of William Batt and Hannah Doswell and Eliza Doswell. Convict James Batt was charged with having on 25 March in Barton Stacey stolen 3 faggots the property of John Courtney. Sentenced to 12 months hard labour in Bridewell. ( in the middle of the sentence he spent 7 days and the last 14 days in solitary confinement) on 27 March 1830 at Barton Stacey, Hampshire, England. He was sentenced to transportation for life for stealing a sheep. (This followed what were referred to as "The Swing Riots", in which many farmers protested against their harsh treatment at the hands of their employers.) After spending the best part of a year on the prison hulk 'Leviathon' in Portsmouth Harbour, he was sent to Hobart on the 'Lord William Bentinck II' on 11 July 1837. Hewas transported on 11 April 1838 on the convict transport ship 'Lord William Bentinck II' from Portsmouth, England to Hobart, Van Diemen's land, Australia.1 He arrived on the convict transport ship 'Lord William Bentinck II' 14 April 1838 in Hobart, Van Diemen's land, Australia from England.1 He on 22 September 1846 was granted a Ticket of Leave in Van Diemen's Land, Australia, this gave him freedom to travel and work anywhere except England. He married Convict Margaret Paterson on 14 December 1846 at Van Diemen's Land, Australia. Convict James Batt married Elizabeth Richards, daughter of William Richards and Mary Webber, on 12 July 1870 at Hamilton, Tasmania, Australia. Convict James Batt died on 29 January 1877 at Hamilton, Tasmania, Australia, at age 74.
