She was convicted on 10 September 1788 at The Old Bailey, London, England, for stealing a prayer book and a Bible from two churches in London (St Charles and Saint Catherine Free Church) she was caught selling them to a pawnbroker. She said she had been given them by her husband of five years (Patrick Rowney) and when the authorities picked her at she ran away. Hannah was a found guilty and sentenced to seven years transportation she never saw her husband again. Although they are were both already married back home in England, prisoners who were transported overseas for some years were encouraged to remarry as there was little chance of them ever returning to England. Bartholomew and Hannah had five children, Paul born on Norfolk island, and two of them were buried there as infants To date no positive record of their daughter Ann’s death can be found, but there are many who think she too came to Van Dieman’s Land and married there too the.
