William Moore There are two cemetries at Carlton Colville - one is the churchyard ofthe parish church of St. Peter, the other is a more recent one openedclose by to take the 'overflow' from the churchyard.?In the LowestoftRecord Office we have transcripts of the monumental inscriptions fromthe newercemetary and also the parish registers BMD,s of Carlton.? Ifyou have any specific names you'd likeme to check I'd gladly do thisfor you.I've located the 'Star of the East' (LT578) in the Port ofLowestoft Research Society's extensivearchive.? The details are asfollows:She was a wooden, carvel-built Dandy (a drifter) built byChambers and Colby at Lowestoft in 1895for I. & J. Beamish (reg. no.104709).? In 1899 her ownership was transferred to Isaac BeamishofLowestoft and the following year she was purchased by William Mooreand George Leabon of CarltonColville. By May 1904 Leabon appears tohave been the sole owner. She was 60.5 feet long with a beamof 17.2feet and a draught of 7.7 feet unladen.? She met an untimely end inthe early hours ofMonday morning, 23rd May 1904.? The 'Star of theEast' had been fishing in Cornish waters out ofNewlyn and wasreturning to Lowestoft.? On deck were:Charles Codling, the Mate - hewas at the helm.George Brighton - Net Stower.Ernest Welham -Cast-offMan.Below deck were:F. W. Rackham - Master.John Rix - NetStower.Albert Foulger - Hawseman.Henry Wilson - CapstainDriver.Wallter Raven - Cabin Boy/Cook.Un-named passenger.Between 2 and3 am she was approximately 8 miles East by South of the Eddystonelighthouse.? Therewas a light breeze from the north-west and theweather was clear. The vessel was well-trimmed withboth her sidelightburning. From out of nowhere she was suddenly rammed by the steamer'Guardian' of Falmouth (325 tons) andwas almost cut in two.? Wilson(aged 17) and Raven who were in their bunks were killed outright bythecollision (it was rumoured that Raven - who was 16 years old and onhis first voyage - was cutin half by the prow of the Guardian). The'Star of the East' sank in about 4 minutes.? All of theremaining crewincluding the anonymous 'passenger' were saved and returned toLowestoft. An Official inquiry into the disaster was held at Lowestoftthe following wednesday and wasreported fully in the Lowestoft Journalon May 28th 1904 under the headline STEAMER SINKS LOWESTOFT FISHINGBOAT. I have a photocopy of the full report if you would like acopy. There is one entry in the index of Lowestoft Fishing VesselOwners for William Moore.? It states that in 1900 he became owner ofthe 'Star of the East.? He lived at Carlton Colville and hisoccupationis given as 'Boat Owner'.There is no record of him as a 'Net maker' inany of the trades directories between 1896 and 1925.I have located aphotograph of the ill-fated 'Star of the East' and have attached it tothisemail.Hope this info is of interest.Warmest Regards,Ivan.Dr. JohnMarshPerception, Memory and Language Group,64 Park PlaceRoom1.03School of PsychologyCardiff University Cardiff CF10 3AT+44(0) 2920876788.
