He attended school at Sheffield and was a member ofthe Church of England where he acted as bellringer into his teenageyears. His daughter reports that her father had to travel to Latrobeto register the birth but forgot to record his intended second name.After leaving school Thomas farmed with his father on the Sheffieldfarm and at age 18 purchased uncleared land in Morey's Road atBarrington. This he cleared and grew potatoes which he carted toDevonport. A home was built and his elder sister Emily was housekeeperfor him. He was a great lover of sport and particularly football whichhe played with the Barrington club. Those seeking work on his farmwere most likely to be employed if they could play a good game offootball. On April 27th 1909 he married Allie Bertha Pullen daughterof Thomas and Margaret Pullen at their home `Vermont' at Barrington.Joyce Margaret Newman was born at Barrington on 13th February 1910 anda son George Alfred Newman was born at Sheffield on 15th March 1913.Another daughter Fay Barbara Newman was born in Devonport on 16thApril 1922.

The Barrington property was farmed until it was sold to Mr. ArchibaldMorey. Having sold the farm it was his intention to move to Victoria,as had other members of the Newman family, and purchase land in theWestern District; but a property `Strathroy' at the Don Headsbelonging to Mr. George Walsh became available and he purchased thatin 1918. He farmed `Strathroy' until 12 months before his death in1964. His wife Allie Bertha predeceased him having died on the 18thMay 1962 aged 80 years.(29) Of his three children only Fay Mainbridge,who has no children, lives in Tasmania.
