Henry Julius Capt
Smith The Battle of Antietam (pronounced /æn'ti?t?m/) (also known as theBattle of Sharpsburg, particularly in the South), fought on September17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek, as part ofthe Maryland Campaign, was the first major battle in the AmericanCivil War to take place on Northern soil. It was the bloodiestsingle-day battle in American history, with about 23,000casualties.[4]
After pursuing Confederate General Robert E. Lee into Maryland, UnionArmy Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan launched attacks against Lee'sarmy, in defensive positions behind Antietam Creek. At dawn onSeptember 17, Maj. Union Gen. Joseph Hooker's corps mounted a powerfulassault on Lee's left flank. Attacks and counterattacks swept acrossMiller's cornfield and fighting swirled around the Dunker Church.Union assaults against the Sunken Road eventually pierced theConfederate center, but the Federal advantage was not followed up. Inthe afternoon, Union Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside's corps entered theaction, capturing a stone bridge over Antietam Creek and advancingagainst the Confederate right. At a crucial moment, Confederate Maj.Gen. A.P. Hill's division arrived from Harpers Ferry and launched asurprise counterattack, driving back Burnside and ending the battle.Although outnumbered two-to-one, Lee committed his entire force, whileMcClellan sent in less than three-quarters of his army, enabling Leeto fight the Federals to a standstill. During the night, both armiesconsolidated their lines. In spite of crippling casualties, Leecontinued to skirmish with McClellan throughout September 18, whileremoving his battered army south of the Potomac River.[5]
Despite having superiority of numbers, McClellan's attacks failed toachieve concentration of mass, allowing Lee to counter by shiftingforces and moving interior lines to meet each challenge. Despite amplereserve forces that could have been deployed to exploit localizedsuccesses, McClellan failed to destroy Lee's army. Nevertheless, Lee'sinvasion of Maryland was ended, and he was able to withdraw his armyback to Virginia without interference from the cautious McClellan.Although the battle was tactically inconclusive, it had significanceas enough of a victory to give President Abraham Lincoln theconfidence to announce his Emancipation Proclamation, whichdiscouraged the British and French governments from potential plansfor recognition of the Confederacy.
