New Romney is a small town in Kent, England, on the edge ofRomneyMarsh, an area of flat, rich agricultural land reclaimed fromthe sea.New Romney was once a sea port, with the harbour adjacent tothechurch, but is now over a mile from the sea (see below). It istheheadquarters of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.
It is interesting to note that New Romney is notsignificantlydifferent in age from the nearby village of Old Romney. However NewRomney, now about a mile and a half from the seafront wasoriginally aharbour town at the mouth of the River Rother. The Rotherestuary wasalways difficult to navigate, with many shallow channelsandsandbanks. To make navigation easier, two large rocks, one biggerthanthe other, were placed at the entrance to the main channel. Thenamesof two local settlements, Littlestone and Greatstone are areminder ofthese aids. There is another likely explanation for theseplace nameswhich is a result of the effects of Longshore Drift. Thishas had thelong-term impact of dispersing shingle and sand deposites, from Westto East, with heavier stones accumulating in the area knownasGreatstone, whilst far smaller shingle is to be found ingreatquantities at Littlestone. Very fine sand is found furthereastwardsat neighbouring St Marys Bay.
In the latter part of the thirteenth century a series of severestormsweakened the coastal defences of Romney Marsh, and the GreatStorm of1287 almost destroyed the town. The harbour and town werefilled withsand, silt, mud and debris, and the River Rother changedcourse, nowrunning out into the sea near Rye, Sussex. The mud, siltand sand wasnever entirely removed from the town, which is why manyold buildings, especially the church, have steps leading down into themfrom thepresent pavement level. John Arter died on 30 January 1817 at Stalisfield, Kent, England, at age 62.
