James Bonney arrived an unknown date in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia on the ship 'Duke of Wellington'. He was born on 2 May 1808 at St Gregory, Sudbury, Suffolk, England.1 He Arrived at Hobart, Van Deimens Land on 'Duke of Wellington', 20.2.1818. He was with his mother and three brothers.
23 August 1824 along with brother Thomas sought land grants. He would be just 14 and the time although it states 'younger going on eighteen'.
He got 60 acres for the grant at a place called South Esk. How much of it was used is not certain since much of it was washed away by floods. Thomas seems to have gotten some and also bought 500 at Tea TreeBrush. They mostly worked the latter as stated in a further application when James was granted a further 400 acres 8 June1831. on 20 February 1818. He married Harriet Reeve on 1 October 1832 at Van Diemen's Land, Australia. James Bonney was proprietor of Cove Inn on 21 December 1832 at Herdsman Cove, Gagebrook, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. He died on 20 July 1882 at 'Woodhall', Perth, Tasmania, Australia, at age 74.
