Convict Joseph Bonney was born on 10 July 1776 at St Gregory or Aldington, Sudbury, Suffolk, England. He married Frances Atkins on 27 October 1795 at Southwark, Surrey, England; This marriage source is the IGI, others suggest marriage was at Sudbury Suffolk which seems more logical.
One account says the marriage was an elopement much to the displeasure of the Atkins Family since she was only 16 yrs old. This would account for the place being Southwark instead of Sudbury.
While this marriage never seems to have been annulled, Joseph remarried in Australia two years before Francis appears on the scene on her own with some of the family. Convict Joseph Bonney was convict in 1812 at Suffolk, England,Joseph was apprehended entering a house in Sudbury in 1812 with intent to steal. He was tried in the assizes in Suffolk 23rd July, 1812 and sentenced to die by hanging which was subsequently commuted to transportation and sent to Australia. At that time he had at least 8 children.
[ 29th June 1812, charged with burglary in the warehouse of Joseph Herbert, his employer. He stole a roll of crepe (used in silk trade) value of 40 pds sterling. At 1 A.M. the same day he unlawfully entered Herbert's dwelling where he was caught and sentenced to death. Taken to Portsmouth after 10 months at Bury gaol and transported for a sentence of 7 years.]
See newspaper article 'East Anglian Times - Jan.27, 1988 p.17'
He died at Tea Tree Bush, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) and buried at St. Davids Cemetery, Hobart.
Transport ship records note his arrival in Australia on the 'General Hewitt', 7 Feb. 1814 at Sydney. By 27th June 1818 he is farming near Hobart in Tasmania where he has placed an ad in the Hobart Gazette newspaper warning against trespassers on his property from 'cutting down or carrying away, timber, or grazing cattle thereon.'
11th April, 1818 in the Hobart Town Gazette he was included in an article about business people of the area who had been robbed. 'Joseph Bonney, Shoemaker of Newtown, had a variety of goods stolen. Mr. Luttrell, Chief Constable of Newtown, stripped off a jacket and found some goods from above. Prisoner was a James Mahoney, a bad character.' Hewas transported in August 1813 on the convict transport ship 'General Hewitt' from Portsmouth, England to Van Diemen's Land, Australia. He arrived 7 February 1814 on the convict transport ship 'General Hewitt' in Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia. He arrived circa 23 July 1814 on the ship 'Spring' in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. He married Rose Sheridan on 21 March 1816 at St. David's Cathedral, 125 Macquarie Street, Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. Convict Joseph Bonney died on 17 February 1827 at Tea Tree, Van Diemen's Land, Australia, at age 50 as a result of fall from his horse while riding home furiously in a state of intoxication from Hobart Town - Inquest this day.
Another paper's account on the death written 16th Feb (date of death uncertain) states that when he fell he dislocated his neck and fractured his skull. Verdict of the inquest - Accidental death. He was buried circa 18 February 1827 at St. David's Park, Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia, Joseph BONNEY
