Ordered that it be entered among the records of this court that William Benbow, Thomas Dooley and John Howles are indicted for an assault on Edward Walter plead not guilty and enter into recognizance of twenty pounds each. He in January 1817 at Epiphany Sessions, Worcester, Worcestershire, England,
On the motion of Mr Peake of Counsel and by consent ordered that the recognisances of William Benbow, Thomas Dooley and John Howles in xxxxx for their appearance at this session to try their traverse on a Bill of Indictment found against them for an assault on Edmond Walker be and the same are hereby respited till the next Session. He was convict on 14 October 1822 at Michaelmas Sessions, Worcester Court, Worcester, Worcestershire, England,
William was convicted for stealing.

First Case – Worcestershire:
The jurors for our Lord the King, upon their Oath present, That William Benbow late of the Parish of Claines in the County of Worcester Labourer. On the seventh day of October in the Year of our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Two with the force and Arms, at the County Claines aforesaid, in the County of Worcester aforesaid, One Deal Board of the value of Four Shillings One board of the value of four shillings, of the Goods and Chattels of Richard Heming and Henry Rowe then and there being found then and there feloniously did steal, take and carry away, against the Peace of our said
Lord the King, his Crown and Dignity.

The jurors for our Lord the King, upon their Oath present, that William Benbow late of the Parish of Claines in the County of Worcester Labourer. on the Seventh Day of October in the third year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Fourth by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, with Force and Arms, at the Parish of Claines aforesaid, in the county of Worcester aforesaid, Seventeen Trusses of Hay of the Value of Twenty shillings of the Goods and Chattels of Archibald Cameron then and there being found, then and there feloniously did steal, take and carry away, against the peace of our said Lord the King, his Crown and Dignity.

THE SENTENCE
Ordered that William who has been tried and found guilty of stealing seventeen Trusses of Hay of the Value of Twenty Shillings the property of Archibald Cameron. One Deal Board of the value of four shillings and one board the property of Richard Heming and Henry Rowe to be transported to some or one of his Majesty’s Plantations beyond the seas for the term of seven years.
Ordered that the treasurer of the County of Stock do and shall forthwith pay or cause to paid to the aforesaid Archibald Cameron the sum of three pounds eighteen shillings for and towards his costs and expenses in the above presentation and also the sum of two pounds and eleven shillings to Messieurs Heming and Rowe for and towards their Costs and Expenses in the said prosecution.

NEWSPAPER REPORTS
1. William Benbow aged 30 years, for stealing hay and corn, the property of Archibald Cameron Esq. of Saint Martin’s, in this city – seven years transportation. (The last mentioned prisoner was also indicted, but not tried, for stealing a board, the property of Messrs. Heming and Roe, of this city)

2. CALENDAR FOR THE COUNTY contains twenty prisoners for trial
Committed to our county gaol, by the Rev. John Foley and Rev Robert Clifton, William Benbow, charged with stealing a quantity of hay and straw, the property of Archibald Cameron, Esq. of this city, and also charged with stealing a deal board, the property of Messrs. Hemming and Roe, of this city

3. TRANSPORTED FOR SEVEN YEARS – William Benbow, Boatman, for stealing 17 trusses of Hay the property of Archibald Cameron, Esq. from the cowshed at Shrubs Hill. He was also indicted, but not tried, for stealing a board, the property of Messrs. Hemming and Rowe. He appeared to receive his sentence with much pleasure, and thanked the Chairman.
William spent several months on a Prison Hulk in England, before being sent to Van Dieman’s Land (Tasmania). A Prison Hulk was an old disused ship. The prisoners were selected from these for each ship leaving, beginning with the worst offenders and topped up with the rest of the convicts.

William’s Description:
William was described as 27 years of age, five foot two and a half inches (1.59 metres) brown hair and brown eyes, and of stout build. A boatman from Worcester.

He was transported 18 March 1823 on the convict transport ship 'Competitor 1' from England to Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia

William, was one of 157 convicts. Master William Ascough (first voyage) in charge of the vessel.

F. + W. + 3 Ch at Worcester. ( This means a father, a wife and three children at Worcester).
A Glove maker in N.P. (We have been told this means his father was a Glove maker in his native place). He arrived 3 August 1823 Van Diemen's Land, Australia, from England. He finished his seven year conviction on 31st October 1829. on 31 October 1829 at Van Diemen's Land, Australia. He married Rebecca Hancock circa 1831. Convict William Benbow was Labourer in 1843. He died on 27 March 1843 at Snug, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. He was buried on 30 March 1843 at Van Diemen's Land, Australia, It is believed he is buried in the Cornellian Bay Cemetery as Snug Cemetery was not opened until the 1850’s.
