He married Harriet Bidewell, daughter of James Bidewell and Hannah Woodbine, on 25 December 1848 at Wymondham, Norfolk, England; They were married 25 Dec. 1848 at which time presumeably John Bidewell ,Harriet's child retained his mother's name and it was never changed.1851 Census lists him as son of William Spruce but name is Bid(e)well.

Witnesses at their marriage were Sarah Howes (a first cousin) and Henry Bidewell (probably her brother). Her father's name is mentioned as James and not recorded as deceased although in all likelihood he was.

Sarah Squires was buried in May 1877 at Haslam's Creek Cemetery, Haslam's Creek, New South Wales, Australia. She died on 23 May 1877 at Kingstown, New South Wales, Australia, at age 81.
