Convict Richard Webb
M, #33813, b. 4 March 1795, d. 2 October 1881
Convict Richard Webb was born on 4 March 1795 at Norwich, Norfolk, England. He was christened on 15 March 1795 at St. Julian's Church, Norwich, Norfolk, England. Hewas transported in 1813 on the convict transport ship 'General Hewitt' from England to New South Wales, Australia. He was convict on 14 February 1814as a boy of 17. He had been found guilty of the burglary of the house of one Mr John Butler, a shopkeeper at Barney, in the county of Norfolk and condemned to be hanged. He was reprieved and his sentence changed to life transportation to the colony of New South Wales. On 15th September 1817, he was charged with being in Parramatta without a pass and was sentenced to be confined in a cell for one week, with no mitigation. 1818 found him working as a labourer for John Blaxland.
Richard married his employee, Johanna (Hannah) Mocklar, nee Wilkinson, the widow of Matthew Mocklar on the 4th Sep 1826. He was granted a conditional pardon in 1834 and received a land grant of 24.5 perches in 1823. This is the green area marked with "1" on the map of Parramatta in 1857.
Richard and Hannah built a large brick and stone house in Parramatta in the late 1830's, this house being mentioned in the 1841 Census. The land this house stood on was a grant to Hannah after her first husband died. The red rectangle on the map denotes this house. Richard built his first timber yard behind the house and worked as a timber yard man. He also helped his brother in law, Thomas Wilkinson, clear his 40 acre property at Castle Hill and accepted the timber as payment for his services, this being plausible with his business as a timber merchant. Richard worked as a Timber yard man and Labourer while Hannah managed a shop the couple had.
Richard bought and leased additional land allotments in Parramatta and then started buying farms, firstly at Pennant Hills, where he bought 5 adjoining over the next nine years, then the Castle Hill and North Rocks areas. He also received a Crown grant of thirty acres.
Richard received an absolute pardon in 1841.
His will lists land and buildings in Phillip and Factory Streets, Parramatta, Land in Church Street as well as the House and a total of eight farms in Pennant Hills and North Rocks. He arrived 14 February 1814 in Australia from England on the convict transport ship 'General Hewitt'. He married Johannah Wilkinson on 4 September 1826. Convict Richard Webb died on 2 October 1881 at Church Street, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia, at age 86. He was buried circa 3 October 1881 at St. John's Church of England Cemetery, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia.
