Administrative Appeals Tribunal and Independent IndigenousAdvisoryCommittee findings 18 October 2002 (Extract from page 18)
A large group of applicants claim descent through a child ofWilliamChallis
who was born in about 1817. The mother was said to be aboriginal.Itwas originally claimed that the mother was a Sarah Linton (fleeMace)who apparently married William Challis. The Register of Births intheSuburb of Hobart for 1854 records the birth of an unnamedfemalechildto William Challis... Sawyer and Sarah Challis formerlyLinton on6 February 1854. The birth was registered on 20 February1854. Therecords of the Anglican Parish of St. David in Hobart for1854 showthat a child Emma Challis Linton’~ whose parents were WilliamandSarah Challis” of Port Cygnet, was baptised on 16 October 1854.Thechild is shown as having been born on 6 April 1854. Thefather’soccupation is shown as Sawyer.
The differences in the spelling of the surname and of the date ofbirthare
symptomatic of many errors and differences in the early recordsofTasmania. These problems are not assisted by the fact that alltherecords were kept in handwriting. The handwriting can be difficulttoread. It is also apparent that there was a relatively low levelofliteracyat the time. The contents of many entries in the recordsareaffirmedby a mark rather than a signature. Of nine entries on thepageof theRegister of Births in Hobart, referred to above, fiveareaffirmed bythe making of a mark. The low level of literacyinevitablyaccounts for different spellings of the same names.
It has now been established that Sarah Challis (Linton/Mace) wasaconvict.
She was not aboriginal or part aboriginal. However, as will appear, thediscovery of that fact did not alter the long history of beliefinaboriginal descent in many persons who could trace their ancestrytothe person known as Emma Challis Linton. Nor did it alter thefact, which will also appear, that photographs of persons in the lineshowthe presence of dark skin colour and other aboriginal features.Theapplicants now suggest that the person known as Emma ChallisLintonwas not the natural daughter of William and Sarah Challis butanaborigine adopted by them. He was Sawyer.1 He was buried. He was born in 1817 at England. He married Convict Sarah Linton in 1885 at Tasmania, Australia. William Challis died in 1889 at Tasmania, Australia.
