John Rayner Denne He became a clock maker in Chilham, living with his parents and, after his father’s death in 1848, continuing to live with his mother (according to the 1851 and 1861 censuses), presumably until her death in 1862.
In February 1886, John “moved back to Canterbury” (something we know from a letter to his cousin Louisa in Australia that he had been considering doing since his daughter died in 1883) and was living at 12 Nunnery Fields, where he remained at least until October 1887; he is known to have lived previously at number 8 in that street, although it is not clear when. John died in Croydon Infirmary on 1 December 1891.
He was born in 1813. He was baptized on 21 April 1813 at Chilham Parish Church, Chilham, Kent, England. He was Clockmaker in 1841. He married Hannah Willis on 28 December 1863. John Rayner Denne appeared in the 1871 census at 91 Wheeler Street, Maidstone, Kent, England. With John’s occupation noted as “house owner”, aged 58, Hannah listed as 37, and the children as 6 years and 8 months respectively. William and Walter, by now aged 19 and 17, had presumably left home.1 He appeared in the 1881 census living at The Park, Godmersham, Kent, England. With his son Edward (age 10), and “living on interest”. He lived in 1881 at Godmersham, Kent, England; In a house in The Park.1 He lived in 1883 at 12 Nunnery Fields, Canterbury, Kent, England. He left a will on 19 May 1890 In his will dated 19 May 1890, John appointed Kate Amos as executrix and left all his estate to her; probate was granted on 11 December and the estate amounted to £75. He appeared in the 1891 census living at 16 Upper Drayton Place, Croydon, Surrey, England, as a aboarder at the home of Rhoda Wells, a widowed needlewoman aged 54; this suggests that, sometime after July 1888 when he wrote from Canterbury the last of four surviving letters to Louisa in Australia, John became too infirm to continue living on his own and moved to Croydon so as to be able to be cared for by Kate, who at the date of John’s death was living nearby at her and William’s 1890 address of 27 Tamworth Road, Croydon. He died on 1 December 1891 at Croydon Infirmary, Croydon, Surrey, England.
