Convict William Hoad was also known as William Hode. He was born in 1816 at Godstone, Surrey, England. He was convict on 27 January 1841William Hoad was born Abt 1816 at or near Godstone, which is a county of Surry in Eastern England.
His occupation was a farm labourer and later he enlisted in the British Army.
He served in the 15th Battalion, The King's Hussars. This unit was a cavalry unit which was recruited from the London area of England. The nickname of the Hussars was the "Tabs"
It carried muzzle loading muskets, the same pattern that had been used for 150 years.
During the 1830's the Battalion was stationed in England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1839 the unit was sent to India and in 1840 was stationed at Madras. A tour Of duty in India usually lasted 5 to 7 years
Sometime in 1840 William was absent from his battalion and as a result was charged with desertion in 1841.

The 'British Sovereign' was a Sunderland built barque of 493 tons. He married Mary Ann Holland in 1856.1 Convict William Hoad lived in 1860 at Tasmania, Australia. He died on 26 June 1895 at Convict Institution, New Town, Tasmania, Australia, Senility. He was buried on 27 June 1895 at Cornelian Bay Cemetery and Crematorium, Tasmania, Australia, Site A. 533 (Pauper.)2
