Convict James Neal

     Convict James Neal was born in 1800. He was the son of William Neal and Sarah Rice. Convict James Neal was christened on 2 March 1800 at Sherston, Magna, Wiltshire, England. He was On December 22, of the same year, further tragedy was to befall this young couple, when a warrant was issued for the arrest of James on the charge of stealing. The New Year held no hope for James and Mary Ann and on January 11, 1820 James along with William Curtis (Snr) and William Curtis (Jnr), was tried for stealing. Court records contain the following notice:Committed by T Smith, Esq. Charges on the oaths of Isaac Manning, and others, with having in company with William Wilcox, feloniously broken into the barn of the said Isaac Manning, at Sherston Magna, and stolen thereout ten bushels of wheat.For their crimes James Neal and William Curtis (Jnr) were sentenced “To be transported beyond the seas for the term of seven years. In the mean time to be confined in the County Gaol.” William Curtis (Snr) was sentenced “to be imprisoned in the House of Correction at the Devizes for two years of hard labour. William Wilcox was also sentenced on this day. In May 1820 James and William were transported to Van Diemen’s Land on board the Guildford. Having received his ticket of leave James Neal married Susannah Finch Richards in Hobart on May 28, 1833. James and Susannah had twelve children between 1833 and 1855, all born in Hobart. James worked as a stone mason until his death on March 17, 1871. Mary Ann (Sayer) Neal never re-married, however remained in Sherston and had six children bearing the Neal name. on 22 December 1819 at Sherston Magna, Wiltshire, England. Hewas transported in May 1820 on the convict transport ship 'Guildford' from England to Van Diemen's Land. He lived in 1830 at 'Pear Tree Cottage', 150 Golbourne Street, Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. He built the cottage at 150 Golbourne St Hobart. The land on which 'Pear Tree Cottage' stands today was acquired by James Neall, a stonemason, in 1839.The sandstone section of the cottage was built shortly afterwards.

In 1877 the property passed from Susannah Finch Neall, widow of James, to Joseph Richard Lewis (Thompson) her son - in - law, for the sum of fifty pounds. It remained in the Lewis family until 1947 when Maurice Charles Atkinson purchased it for six hundred pounds.

D. William Neall, a compositor licensed printer, inherited the property with Susannah and shared the fifty pounds, paid by Joseph Richard Lewis.

In 1913 Blanch Olive Lewis applied for administration of the estate by Public Trustee as James Richard Lewis also died intestate.
He married Susannah Finch Richards on 28 May 1833 at Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. Convict James Neal died on 17 March 1872.
